If the idea of ‘packing lightly’ doesn’t come onto your radar or you are hopelessly disorganised, here are some useful tips to ensure that you can fit everything into one bag;
1. What bag?
Are you travelling for a short break or planning a long escape? Either way, you should carefully consider what type of bag you wish to take with you before departing.
Suitcases give you more scope and allow you to designate certain items as hand luggage. If you are just taking one piece of hand luggage, it’s important to know what the size requirements are for the airline you are travelling with. It might also be worth noting that some budget airlines will charge you extra to check in more than one bag.
If you are taking a suitcase, invest in a sturdy, solid one with wheels so that your valuable items are not destroyed once you arrive at your destination.
2. Know your limits
Typically, most airports operate a system which only allows 100ml liquids to be taken within your hand luggage. This also includes gels, creams, wax, pastes and other liquids of this consistency. They must be placed in a transparent and re-sealable plastic bag which must be 20cm x 20cm. Most airlines also have weight limitations to consider for luggage. If you exceed the designated amount (which varies depending on the airline) you could face a significant fine.
3. How to pack
Do you fold, roll or bundle when you are packing? It may be a good idea to opt for one of those airtight plastic bags to avoid creasing? Whichever one you try, the main point is not to ‘over-pack.’
4. What to pack?
Think about what you will be wearing throughout your trip and whether you really need five pairs of the same shoes in different shades. Your space is limited and you will often take home more than you brought out with you initially. Whilst you may have the time to get started on reading the full works of Shakespeare, such an item could take up a significant amount of space in your luggage.
5. Safety
Once you have completed the packing ordeal, you will want to keep your travel bag safe. One way you could do this is by putting two luggage labels on with the details of your flight and destination. It could also be advisable to ensure that your travel insurance covers lost luggage. Always lock your checked-in bags as unlocked suitcases could be invalid on your insurance.
